First Capital Connect and the environment

At First Capital Connect we care passionately about the environment and are taking steps to reduce our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, by making the best use of our resources and reducing waste. We also want to help our passengers make their journeys as sustainable as possible.

First Capital Connect was only the 11th company in the UK to achieve a certificated energy management system based on the international standard 'ISO 50001:2011'.

What we're doing to reduce our impact on the environment

Electric trains are the most environmentally friendly method of public transport. As well as helping to reduce the UK's carbon emissions, we are also working to reduce our own carbon footprint.

What you can do to have a greener journey

Did you know that over 40% of the average person's carbon footprint comes from personal transport such as cars, motorbikes and flights? Travelling by rail is much more environmentally friendly than taking the car but there is more you can do.

Blackfriars Solar Bridge

The world’s largest solar bridge has launched at Blackfriars station.

6,000m² of solar panels on the station’s roof – enough to cover 23 tennis courts, provides 50% of the station’s energy and saves over 500,000 kg of CO2 per year - the same amount as 89,000 car journeys.

The roof has the ability to generate 1.1 megawatts (MWp) which is enough energy to power 333 houses all year round.
