3.7.2009 First Capital Connect wins two prizes at this year’s Railway Industry Innovation Awards
- Winners in the Innovator of the Year Award and Passenger Experience category
- Highly Commended in the Small Scale Project Category and the Cross Industry Partnership Award
First Capital Connect has won two awards and been highly commended in a further two at this year’s Railway Industry Innovation Awards.
Steve Castle, Area Operations Manager at First Capital Connect, won the Innovator of the Year Award for the development of a safety training DVD for train drivers. The ‘It can happen to you’ DVD featured real drivers to highlighting their real safety experiences to offer advice and guidance to other train drivers.
Steve wrote, produced and even starred in the DVD which he saw through from inception to completion. He features in the DVD giving critical help and advice and made sure that every driver within the company was given his or her own personal copy.
The ‘Crikey’ Campaign aimed at raising awareness of the £5.5 billion Thameslink Programme received the prestigious award for Passenger Experience for its role in communicating the project to customers. The broad customer communications campaign included a distinct stripey brand and clear and concise information across a host of outlets for customers.
First Capital Connect was highly commended in two awards. The first was in the Small Scale Project category for improving station facilities. The second was for the cross-industry partnership award for achieving the fleet for the new Thameslink Programme timetable.

The Railway Industry Innovation Awards 2009 is organised by Modern Railways and the Railway Forum and is the longest-established railway industry awards. The Awards were presented by the Minister of State for Transport, Lord Adonis.
